The Horikami Family 2007

Aloha! To You All! Well…..Let me begin to share a little about me...my family….and our life together! I was born in Hawaii on the island of Maui, yes a beautiful place known as the valley isle. I remember diving off the pier in Lahaina town on the island of Maui for coins that the tourists would throw into the ocean to watch us dive off the pier and find our way to the bottom to retrieve the tossed coins...it was fun! It was the good old days you know….We were just little kids then and we fished and spent all of our time outside. We moved to the island of Oahu when I was very young, yes the five of us...my Mother, Dad, older brother, myself and younger sister. We lived in Waikiki which is where the landmark Diamond Head is located. We spent a lot of time at the beach and my Dad was a fishaholic! Yes he loved fishing and spear fishing. My Mother was like all Moms loving, caring and taught us right from wrong C O N T I N U A L L Y !!!!!!!!!!! Well, you know what I mean…...My Dad taught us to work hard at everything you do...do your best! And he was the best example...Well as time went on I wanted to be a police officer and went to college to pursue this field in which I was quickly discouraged by family. So since I was dishwasher in a restaurant at the time I was in school I focused myself in the culinary field…..It is a long fun journey which its wave I am still riding to the end. It requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice and you can take it as far as you want to. I decided a long time ago to stop at a certain point to put family and life first. Friends like Mark Okumura, a one time Alan Wong’s great Pastry Chef and James Beard guest Chef, Takashi Ishikawa Olympic Gold Medal recipient and Stanton Ho World Pastry Cup recipient among other numerous awards have dedicated their lives and put numerous hours of work and practice to reach their achievements in life and I respect them and their friendship and work. It is how far you want to take it! When my beautiful wife and I got married I remember her picking the wedding date June 6th! “well” I said there is a problem because I have a wedding party for 200 on June 7th! She said “I know you can handle it” and so….while preparing the cakes for the wedding I finally started my own cake and finished it at 5:30 am the following morning! Yes! The day of our wedding! It was at our home so we had family help us with the food for the reception and there was no honey moon that night! Ha! Ha! So does being a chef a good thing? It depends on how far ya wanna take it! We have seven children and one on the way! Please come by to visit us as family….Hele Mai (come in) Hele mai! Come into my house! Visit with us….let us be friends always…..like the days of old Hawaii!........ALOHA! And MAHALO! From our family at the Chocolate Bluebird to you! A L O O O O O O H H A A A A A A !!!!!!
